As we transition to 2023, we are now over 3 months into Iredell County Building Standards implementation of a new permitting software. While there remain some growing pains, we are now realizing the anticipated enhancement of service to the public.

The unprecedented surge in development throughout all regions of Iredell County dictated a change in permitting software. In order to address the increasing workload, focus shifted from in-person application to online permitting for building as well as trades. Which was then coupled with the concept of a single application (one stop shop) approach to permit application. Both initiatives were undertaken to streamline the process, refine the overall workflow, and empower the public to be actively engaged in the permitting process.

The EnerGov permitting software is configured so that a single application, upon receipt, (and based upon the type of project) is routed to the appropriate departments for consideration and review. This application requests specific information, plans, and other documentation describing the anticipated project. The applicant is emailed periodic notifications and can monitor status online; confident the responsible departments have been made aware of and are actively reviewing their project.

Applicants and members of the public can access Citizen Self-Service from their computer or device (including making online payments) for a variety of projects and permit types through-out Iredell County.

As with previous county permitting software, EnerGov serves as the primary permitting software utilized by:

• the Planning Departments of Statesville, Troutman, and Iredell County;

• the Fire Marshals for Statesville and Iredell County;

• Iredell County Environmental Health (both Onsite Water Protection and Food & Lodging);

• Iredell County Building Standards for both Commercial and Residential projects;

• As well as other Development Services provided by the Town, City and County

EnerGov enhances effectiveness by providing secure uploading of documents with the application, including site plans, septic lay-outs, and building plans for both residential and commercial projects.

Existing records have been converted to the EnerGov System, as well as Contractor Accounts, and currently Active Permits. Many contractors have already created new accounts in Citizen Self-Service, often with staff assistance merging several legacy accounts together. All active eTRAKiT permits currently linked to the contractor by the associated email address will remain on the dashboard of the Contractor’s new Citizen Self-Service account for convenience and clarity.

Contractors who experience difficulty locating their permits on the dashboard, can contact Building Standards, or Central Permitting for assistance with updating a converted permit (or merge multiple accounts).

Change is never as easy, though transition is often necessary and essential for growth. We are beginning to realize our goals in the transition to EnerGov. The implementation of EnerGov is genuinely simplifying the application process for the public, while allowing staff to achieve greater efficiency through-out the entire permitting process.

Thank you for your patience and thoughtful feedback as this transition continues into the new year.
